Pumpkin pie is one of my husbands favorite deserts at Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, there are times when you buy one, it just taste bland. For a pumpkin pie fan there is nothing like one that falls flat. You can add all the flavor and make them bold by making your own spice blend. This allows you to add a little more of the flavors you like to make them pop.
Pumpkin Pie – Base Recipe
The following recipe can be used as the starting point for creating a seasoning blend that makes you salivate for more. As for other recipes in this blog, the purpose is to provide a foundation upon which you can build to create your own blend.
Pumpkin Pie Spice Blend
Equipment
- 1 Spice Grinder
Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon Cinnamon: Ground
- 1-1/2 teaspoons Nutmeg
- 3/4 teaspoon Allspice
- 3/4 teaspoon Cardamom (See Note 1)
- 1/4 teaspoon Ginger: Dried, Ground
- 1/8 teaspoon Cloves: Ground
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a bowl.
- Using a spice grinder, pulse option, grind to a fine powder.
- Store in an airtight container.
Notes
Fresh Ground vs Ready to Use
In this recipe if you want the flavors to be as bold and rich as possible grind your own spices. Cinnamon and Cloves can be found in their original form. By grinding your own spices when making the blend, the flavors produced will be bolder and stand out more. If you like cinnamon this is the best way to get the flavor to jump out at you. If you don’t like cloves as much, it would be better to use less of the fresh ground or us the store bought ground.
Why Make Your Own
The first reason to make your own spice is the cost. The spices used in the blend are commonly used in other blends. Buying them in bulk saves money. Also when you replenish your spices as they are used, they stay fresher and provide stronger flavors. Making your own blend also allows you to adjust the flavors to your pallet. Some people love cloves and other prefer not to have them in anything. If you like the flavor you can add more. If you don’t eliminate it from your version of the recipe. The goal is to achieve a blend that hits all the right points for you and those you cook for.
Flavoring It Your Way
Review the recipe. Which ingredients do you like most? Which ones not so much? Is there any you would prefer to leave out? Once you determine which ones you would adjust the next step it to start experimenting . As you try new blends, keep track of the changes you make. There is nothing sadder than coming up with the perfect blend and not being able to make it again. With this recipe having so few ingredients, adjust only one at a time. See what difference it makes. If you like the change, update your version of the recipe. If you don’t, go back to what you had before and change something else. The goal is to be able to say, “I Flavored It My Way!”
