Let’s start talking about how to Flavor It Your Way when baking. I want to start with baking a simple chocolate cake. The changes here can be used when either cooking a cake from a box mix or cooking from scratch. Whichever way you prefer to bake works, and the end result is Chocolate Cake Your Way.
If you cook a cake using the ingredients as listed, it usually tastes OK but lacks a depth of flavor, and sometimes is a little dry. There are a couple of simple changes you can make to not only add flavor but also add moistness. Changes can also increase the boldness of flavors.
Whether you are using a box mix or making your chocolate cake from scratch these adjustments have the same effect on the flavor.
Chocolate Cake – Per the Box
Ingredients
- 1 Box Dry Mix
- 1 Cup Water
- 1/3 Cup Vegetable Oil
- 3 Eggs
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients.
- Bake per instructions.
Make a couple of simple changes and increase the richness and boldness of the flavors. Let’s take a look at a couple of substitutions I find please my taste buds.
Chocolate Cake Your Way
Ingredients
- 1 Box Chocolate Cake Mix
- 1 Cup Milk
- 1/3 Cup Olive Oil Extra Virgin
- 3 Eggs
Instructions
- Combine all Ingredients.
- Bake per Instructions.
Notes
Not only do these substitutions work for chocolate cake but they also work for brownies.
Personal Finding: This works with chocolate cakes but if you try to substitute the olive oil in a white cake mix it does not have the same effect. This was one of the things I tried but decided it was only a one time thing.
Whatever substitution you choose you may want to try a couple of different ones. Each one will provide a slightly different flavor in the end result. For example: soy will add one flavor, and almond will add another, and coconut yet another. Several of them comes in original flavor as well as with vanilla, or other flavor in it. Some of them will add a little more sweetness, some a little less, etc.
I am sure there are other ideas for enhancing the flavor and adding moisture to chocolate cakes or brownies. Please share what you do to create Chocolate Cake Your Way!
